“FairPrice Bat Meat” —Instagrammer Apologises For Alarming Graphic

On Thursday, 6 February 2020, while Singapore was worrying about the escalation of DORSCON from yellow to orange, an Instagrammer posted a doctored image of bat meat being sold by NTUC FairPrice.

Although it was taken down, the picture circulated widely on social media, and some people apparently believed it was real.

NTUC FairPrice also had to release a statement on its Facebook Page clarifying that they do not sell bat meat.

A few days later, the Instagrammer has come out to “clear up any misunderstandings and to apologise for distress that my post has caused audiences and Fairprice itself.”

“I’ve read about all the stir on the xenophobia that is happening as a result of the CoronaVirus spreading – the generalisation that all Chinese people consume things such as bats, rodents and snakes and that Chinese people are to blame for it all. My intention of this was just to help people visualise how ridiculous the idea is by creating an image of a bat being sold and packaged nicely and casually. It was a satirical imagery for the commotion thats going on.”

He acknowledges that:

“Unfortunately, due to my misuse of Fairprice (Pasar)’s logo, it came off misleading and caused quite a stir.
Hopefully my initial intentions are now understood and to clear things up, i hope you guys can help me share this image and my apology.”

A few days ago, I posted the above artwork in light of the spread of the Wuhan Corona Virus that is occuring right now.

————————————
Unexpectedly, the fictional image i created was spread on social media really quickly and it came to my attention that it was causing alot of confusion for some audiences. My unauthorised use of Fairprice’s logo misled alot of people to think that bat meat was an actual product that Fairprice carried.

————————————
I would like to use this post to clear up any misunderstandings and to apologise for distress that my post has caused audiences and Fairprice itself.

I think this is a great lesson for myself and any like-minded artists out there that creativity might not be taken the right way by everyone. It definitely wasn’t wise on my part to think that it was a simple art work so using an existing organisation’s logo would not have much of an impact.

I also would like to use this opportunity to touch on my main intention of the artwork. I’ve read about all the stir on the xenophobia that is happening as a result of the CoronaVirus spreading – the generalisation that all Chinese people consume things such as bats, rodents and snakes and that Chinese people are to blame for it all. My intention of this was just to help people visualise how ridiculous the idea is by creating an image of a bat being sold and packaged nicely and casually. It was a satirical imagery for the commotion thats going on. ————————————
Unfortunately, due to my misuse of Fairprice (Pasar)’s logo, it came off misleading and caused quite a stir.

Hopefully my initial intentions are now understood and to clear things up, i hope you guys can help me share this image and my apology.
